How Can I Hook an MP3 Player Up to an External Power Source to Increase the Volume?

I need to hook up an MP3 Player to a battery and a larger speaker in order to get the volume to be audible and loud without having it right next to your ear. How can I do this? Anyone who can produce an electrical schematic (I know how to read them) gets best answer.
